Bengel macht Schule

workshops for school classes and groups of students

For school classes and groups of students, we offer special guided tours of the historic factory followed by a workshop.

The guided tour of the factory brings to life both the history of the former fashion jewellery metropolis of Idar-Oberstein and its importance in global trade and for the local population.
Technical abilities and skills, economic development and, last but not least, the influence of political trends over the course of time are presented in a differentiated and epochal context. All this is set against the backdrop of 150 years of industrial history.
Historical jewellery production can be experienced with all the senses thanks to the fully functional machines. In the bookable workshops, pupils have the opportunity to make their own necklaces with pendants.

The following learning content is taught:

  • Economic, social and cultural contexts of people's lives from the 2nd half of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century using the example of a jewellery factory
  • Working and living conditions of industrial workers and the entrepreneurial family in this era
  • Machines and tools and how they worked in the pre-digital age
  • The production of costume jewellery
  • The importance of Oberstein's jewellery industry for the development of the town

Professors, teachers and those responsible for education are invited to contribute their ideas or define their own key topics in advance together with our tour guides.

School classes are divided into groups of a maximum of 15 pupils.
